Strolling Challenges, Faros, and
Instant Resets
Currently, I make nearly all my living as a stage magician on ships, in theaters, and festival stages. And as close-up magician performing a formal close-up show at a table.
But for years my bread & butter (not to mention rent) was strolling magic …
There was a time when most of my magic earnings were made strolling, both in restaurants and private events.
My requirements for my material were:
Strong magic
Bulletproof magic
Instantly resettable magic
And that brings us to Paul Gertner’s modern classic, Unshuffled.
A deck is shown to have a mish mash of dots and dashes on its side.
A card is selected.
The deck is shuffled with a “perfect shuffle” (A faro)
Now that mish mash of dots and dashes have formed letters! The word Unshuffled appears four times on the edge of the deck.
Another perfect shuffle.
Now the word Unshuffled is appears twice on the edge of the deck.
Another perfect shuffle.
Now the word Unshuffled is appears once and big on the edge of the deck.
Bonus: Even after three shuffles, the deck is shown to be in new deck order.
One more shuffle, as a climax, the name of the selected card appears on the side of the deck!
GREAT TRICK. MODERN CLASSIC.
Oh, and I almost forgot …
To repeat the trick the magician has to sneak off and give the deck five faro shuffles.
Strong? Yes.
Bulletproof? Yes.
Instantly resettable? Not. Even. Close.
Ugh. I admit, some magicians don’t care about having to sneak off to reset, but I do …particularly if I could figure out a way to bring the effect to strolling without the reset.
And I did, over thirty years ago.
