…in your Silk To Egg routine!!

The problem isn’t fat rolls.

The problem is eye rolls.

Look at a recent popular Dixon Magic release, Epically Mental. It’s received raves. The reason for the buyers’ raves began here: I relentlessly looked at a classic routine from the audience viewpoint, then cut the fat from the routine. Then I added an applause popping moment at the climax.

I’ve been doing the same thing with Silk To Egg.

Step One: Eliminate The Fat

Typical silk to egg routine:

Part One:
Wave silk.
Put silk in fist.
Silk “turns into” an egg.
Silk comes out of your pocket.
“NOW I’LL TELL YOU HOW IT’S DONE”

Part Two:
Show the egg is fake and has a hole in it.
Show you have two silks.
Do trick AGAIN …you know, the same trick they just saw.
End with cracking egg.

Look up at Part One again. When you shove the silk in your fist and show the egg, 99% of the audience already thinks you have a hollow fake egg. It’s an eye roll moment in the routine.

THEN you REPEAT the whole process again.
Finally, comes the moment when you show the egg is now real.
Up until that moment, you’re not exactly rocking the room.
That Part One?
IT’S FAT. Filler. Unnecessary. Worst of all — you’re wasting the audience’s time. That may sound harsh, but so do most fat eliminating diets. That’s the price of being lean and strong — you gotta cut out the fat!!

It’s like joke writing 101: Nine out of ten times, the fewer words that are said before the punchline, the better the joke is. Same with magic.

Step Two: Learn From The Chop Cup

Picture a classic performance of the Chop Cup. How many final loads typically appear?
Two.
Not one.
TWO!

It’s the second load — the second beat –– that pops the impossibility of the routine and the applause. It’s the cherry on top of the sundae that makes the experience that much better.

And THAT is what I’ve added into Silk To Egg Express.
After the egg is cracked open, the magician walks to the front row and the silk reappears in an impossible and very comical location.
