A man, John, and woman, Mary, are invited on stage. Mary stands in the center. The magician asks, “You ever see those Las Vegas shows where the magician works with the scantily clad, feather boa waving assistants? I see those assistants and ask myself, WHY SHOULD THE LADIES HAVE ALL THE FUN?”
He then hands a red feather boa to John and the magician wears a black feather boa. “Mary, you are the amazing magician in this trick. John and I are your lovely assistants. And every time we twirl and shake our boas, the audience will go wild!!”
John and the magician shake the boas and yes, the audience goes wild.
(Is this a virtually guaranteed applause cue and gag throughout the routine? Yes. Yes, it is.)
Mary is handed a deck of cards and ask to mixed them up. She does so.
To speed things up, one half of the deck is discarded, and only half of the deck is used.
Mary is told the randomly deal cards back and forth between John and the magician. One at a time? Two at a time? Three at a time? It is completely up to Mary and the split is 100% under Mary’s control.
The fun comic interaction continues, with a funny sight gag thrown in.
Then the magician explains what really has been going on. “For a new magician, like Mary, to come up on stage and do the miracle she’s just done — and doesn’t even realize it yet — required her to relax. That’s why John and I did our little silliness with the feather boas.”
“But here’s what she and she alone actually did. I’m wearing a BLACK boa. John is wearing a RED boa. Mary dealt the cards — SHE decided where every card went — and she divided them by color.”
John and the magician show their cards. The magician’s cards are all black. John’s cards are all red.
The boas are twirled one last time and ...the audience goes wild!
